Smartphone Technology for Coaches Part 5

At the recent National Coaching Conf in Colorado, I had the pleasure of meeting the Dartfish CEO who briefed me on their iPhone app–EasyTag (also available or soon to be available on Android platforms).  Even if you don’t use Dartfish software to analyze your video, you can use their free EasyTag app to help you manage video analysis and gather game data.  Of note, I will be exploring video analysis software in an upcoming blog.

Basically you use EasyTag to time stamp activities of interest during the game or competition you are observing.  You can tailor EasyTag with up to 30 buttons to choose from.  For example, I created a panel in EasyTag for basketball so my buttons are:  free throw, jump shot, set shot, offensive rebound, defensive rebound, steal, turnover, and foul.  By pressing the button you time stamp when that activity occurred allowing you to find them easier from game video.  EasyTag also allows you to customize each button including time duration of each activity.   At the end of the game or competition, EasyTag provides statistical data on how many sport activities took place and how long they took, and of course when they occurred during the game.

My initial analysis is that this tool might be best for coaches working in team sports such as basketball, football, soccer, field hockey, volleyball and hockey.

As a longtime Dartfish user, I’d also recommend your readers take a look at http://www.PowerChalk.com. It’s completely web based where Dartfish requires 300mb of software to be installed. I’m using it for my travel baseball team and it’s much more approachable for my other coaches and parents.
