A growing movement in sport is the long term athlete development concept (LTAD). Leading this movement are a number of folks in Canada including their national sport agencies who sponsor our December 2013 Coaching Resource of the Month–Canada’s Sport For Life.

Before I go any further, here is a quick primer on LTAD:

Children, youth and adults need to do the right things at the right time to develop in their sport or activity – whether they want to be hockey players, dancers, figure skaters or gymnasts. Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) describes the things athletes need to be doing at specific ages and stages.

Science, research and decades of experience all point to the same thing: kids and adults will get active, stay active, and even reach the greatest heights of sport achievement if they do the right things at the right times. This is the logic behind the Long-Term Athlete Development model (LTAD).

There are seven stages within the basic LTAD model:

Stage 1: Active Start (0-6 years)
Stage 2: FUNdamental (girls 6-8, boys 6-9)
Stage 3: Learn to Train (girls 8-11, boys 9-12)
Stage 4: Train to Train (girls 11-15, boys 12-16)
Stage 5: Train to Compete (girls 15-21, boys 16-23)
Stage 6: Train to Win (girls 18+, boys 19+)
Stage 7: Active for Life (any age participant)

Stages 1, 2 and 3 develop physical literacy before puberty so children have the basic skills to be active for life. Physical literacy also provides the foundation for those who choose to pursue elite training in one sport or activity after age 12.

Stages 4, 5 and 6 provide elite training for those who want to specialize in one sport and compete at the highest level, maximizing the physical, mental and emotional development of each athlete.

Stage 7 is about staying Active for Life through lifelong participation in competitive or recreational sport or physical activity.

Here in the US, LTAD is gaining some big fans. USA Hockey has adapted it to its programs and call it the American Development Model (ADM). Check out ADM here.

In late Nov 2103, the Aspen Institute’s Sport & Society Program held a conference to discuss the role of coaches in implementing a LTAD-like effort here in the US. Check out it here.

Of note, the Institute’s President, Dave McCann, is available nationwide to speak on LTAD, how to implement it in a sports program and the benefits associated with LTAD.

This month’s free coaching education online course comes to us courtesy of the US Sports Academy (USSA) in Daphne, Alabama. FULL DISCLOSURE WARNING: I am a bit biased about the USSA as I am a graduate of their masters in sport science program. USSA offers a free Introduction to Coaching course which covers the responsibilities of a sports coach. Topics covered include: Ethics, Administrative Duties, Methodology and Pedagogy, Sports Psychology, Conditioning and Nutrition, and Injury Prevention and Emergency Care in Sports.

If anyone has taken it, love to get some feedback to pass on to others.
