Speaking of youth sports stories, I’d like to share an incident pertaining to youth sports parents. I’m not sure how much emphasis is placed on youth sports parents within the coaching education community, but it is every bit as important.
Several years ago, I was assisting with coaching my daughter’s T-ball team. I was coaching first base, and cheering the kids on when they got to me, and helping them know when to go to second base. I think the bases were loaded when one kid got a hit. I was cheering him on when all of a sudden, on the third base side of the field, a parent came storming out of the stand, burst through the field gate, and began beating up the third base coach. I was standing there in awe, not able to believe what I was seeing. This was a TBALL GAME, for crying out loud !! As it turned out, the parent was mad because he thought the third base coach should have “sent” his kid, who happened to be at third, but instead the coach held him at third. Unbelievable.
We see incidents of “parent rage” on the news occasionally. I would venture to say there are many incidents we never see. I think a great emphasis on parent education should be a very big component embedded within our coaching education programs. Greater discussion of this welcome !!
