I came across an interesting use of technology in sport a few weeks ago. A company called 94Fifty has created a system utilizing a sensor on a basketball (must use some sort of RFID tech) combined with proprietary pattern recognition software to capture incredible data about the flight of the ball. The data is available to coaches and players within seconds providing indepth feedback.
Currently the company is focusing on basketball, but Mike Crowley, 94Fifty CEO, informed me yesterday that they are developing their technology for soccer and hockey next.
I see this type of sensor technology to be applicable to many more sports including my personal favorite, the throwing events in track. It will be interesting to see how the use of this technology spreads. At this point, I don’t have any ideas on the cost which is always a consideration for coaches and athletic administrators to consider.
